Minister holds high-level meet

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPRUAM: Water Resources Minister N. K. Premchandran held a high-level meeting here on Saturday for preparing a comprehensive report on the Mullaperiyar dam and a note on Kerala's rights to be submitted to the Union Ministers for Water Resources and Law on the basis of the discussions held by the all-party delegation from Kerala with the Prime Minister.

An official pressnote said the meeting discussed the admission made by Tamil Nadu years ago about the threat to the dam safety, the decisions taken in the wake of it and the unilateral withdrawal of that State subsequently from implementing the decisions. Tamil Nadu had admitted that the dam faced a safety threat and had agreed to construct a new dam at meetings held in the presence of the chairman of the Central Water Commission in November 1979 and April 1989. The meeting also discussed Tamil Nadu's failure to construct the new dam though it was cleared by the Kerala Government. It resolved to hold further discussions with officials and experts and take steps to convince the Centre of Kerala's concern. It also decided to discuss the issue with lawyers and the Law Department.

The meeting wanted the report to be submitted to the Union Ministers to reflect fully the safety threat being faced by the people of Kerala.
