TIRUCHI:
The Railway Protection Force (RPF) has planned to set up dedicated bomb detection and disposal squads in Tiruchi, Madurai and Thiruvananthapuram railway divisions.
The squads are expected to function soon. Of the five divisions - Chennai, Tiruchi, Madurai, Thiruvananthapuram and Palakkad in Southern Railway jurisdiction, the RPF has dedicated bomb squads in Chennai and in Coimbatore, which comes under the Palakkad Division.
A top RPF official said a sum of Rs.30 lakh would be earmarked to set up each squad. The squad would comprise 10 to 15 men who had been trained in bomb detection and disposal. It would function under the supervision of the respective Divisional Security Commissioner. Over 100 RPF men had been trained in bomb detection at the zonal level.
The RPF has proposed to set up another bomb squad in Chennai and one at Ernakulam in Kerala. There are also plans to install closed circuit television sets at about 20 stations, including Tiruchi.
