TIRUPUR: The fourth round of direct talks between trade unions and industry associations here on Friday failed to make any progress. The talks to reach a wage accord for two lakh hosiery workers was postponed. Toeing the line of Tirupur Exporters' Association, the joint committee of trade associations has insisted that the fresh agreement should be for five years with no wage hike for the first year, sources said. Vehemently opposing it, the trade union leaders wanted that the agreement should be for three years. M. Chandran of CITU said the industry associations had told the workers that there would be further talks on the charter of demands only if the workers agreed to the five-year accord. ``We have told them we would not yield to this pressure. It is a delaying tactics. We told them that they were willing to participate in further talks if the owners were ready to discuss on charter of demands,'' he said. All six trade union leaders are planning to hold a joint meeting on Wednesday to decide further course of action. They hinted that they would intensify the public stir, including one-day general strike, condemning the trade associations.
