Never did Sajith Kumar P.R imagine that his interest in Kathakali would take him to foreign lands. A native of Kodussery in Angamaly, Sajith is awaiting the nod from the Canadian Embassy in India to fly to Canada. He aims to study dancers and balletic choreography to make a comparative analysis of traditional Canadian dance forms and Kathakali. "I have been invited by Alberta Ballet and Coleman Lemieux & Compagnie, two dance centres in Canada. Shaiju Thomas, make-up artist, is expected to accompany me," Sajith says.
Comparative study
During the 20-day tour, the-duo will make a comparative study of make-up, ornaments and themes of Kathakali and Canadian dance forms. Sajith was one of the two Kathakali students who won a Government scholarship in the art form in 1998. He was given a scholarship of Rs.2,000 a month for two years. "With the passage of over five years, I can now apply for India Government fellowship. I chose Canadian dances since many people have done comparative studies of European and American dances."
Canadian stories
Ethnic Canadian stories, Sajith hopes, would become one of the themes of Kathakali, which now draws upon on legends such as the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. "It will add to the popularity of the art form." Sajith did a six-year-diploma course in Kathakali from the Unnayi Warrier Smaraka Kalanilayam, Irinjalakuda, followed by postgraduation. A professional artiste, Sajith is a guest lecturer in Kathakali at Gayatri Central School, Pala. He has to his credit 1,000 stage performances across the country.
