Karwar: A seminar "Uttara Kannada district an ecologically sensitive area," organised at Sonda Swarnavalli Math on Friday, resolved to form a working team for preparing a report indicating the possibility of declaring the district a bio-sphere zone under Forest Act, Wild Life Protection Act and Coastal Regulation Zone Act. It was also resolved to submit a proposal to the Union Government in this regard. The team would include environmental scientists and activists, representatives of NGOs and officials of the Forest Department. Participants of the seminar, including T.V. Ramachandra of Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore; Praveen Bhargav of Wild Life First, an NGO, and Nagesh Hegde, writer, stressed the need to prepare environmental status report for the district with special reference to endangered species, wildlife and bio-diversity.
Identification
Anant Kumar Hegde, MP, said vital environmentally sensitive spots in the district should be identified and brought to the notice of the Union Government to impress upon it to declare the district a bio-sphere reserve. Conservator of Forests of Canara Circle G. Satish said there was a proposal before the Department to declare sensitive areas in the Western Ghats as ecologically sensitive. He said enforcement of Acts relating to environmental protection would save the environment from degradation.
