PATHANAMTHITTA: The Ayyappa Temple at Sabarimala opened on Sunday afternoon for the four-day Onam festival celebrations that begin on Monday morning. Melsanthi M. Sukumaran Namboodiri opened the sanctum sanctorum at 5.30 p.m. However, the rituals will begin with Tantri Kandararu Rajeevaru performing the auspicious Ganapati homom on Monday morning. The Melsanthi will offer Uthrada sadya to the devotees and the staff attached to the temple and various other offices at the holy hillock immediately after the utchapuja. The annual Onasadya at Sabarimala will be held after the utchapuja on Tuesday. A Sahasrakalasabhishekom and Kalabhabhishekom will be performed at the temple prior to the utchapuja on September 7, the Tantri said. The temple will be closed on September 7 evening.
