THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) State committee in Kerala is looking forward to a negotiated settlement to the stalemated professional college admissions, Front convener Vaikom Viswan has said. Mr. Viswan told reporters after a meeting of LDF leaders here on Sunday that a solution should be in sight in the coming days so that admissions could proceed without loss of time. Education Minister M.A. Baby briefed the meeting, chaired by CPI State secretary Veliyam Bhargavan, about the progress of his dialogue with private self-financing college managements and the proposals that were now under consideration to end the deadlock. Sunday's LDF committee was partial in nature, as all leaders could not attend it. A full meeting of the LDF panel would be held on September 9, the convener said. From available indications, the discussions at Sunday's meeting was not without its share of drama, as some of the senior leaders attending it were critical of the manner in which the Government had gone about enacting the Kerala Professional Colleges Act. Their main criticism was about the absence of any discussion about the provisions of the Act and lack of consultation on important amendments. Some of these amendments were at the root of the current stand-off, they said. UNI adds: The issue of Public Works Minister P.J. Joseph's alleged misbehaviour with a woman passenger on board a flight was not taken up at Sunday's meeting. Kerala Congress (J) leaders informed that they would not be able to attend the meeting because of some urgent matters, Mr. Viswan said.
