EMERGENCY NEEDS: A training programme under way in Pudukottai. Photo: R. Ashok
PUDUKOTTAI: It was a different experience for the 25 scout masters and 21 guide captains from Pudukottai, Tiruchi, Perambalur, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts, who underwent a training programme on `Ambulanceman', which mainly aims at rescuing those caught in a critical situation like fire, floods or road accident. Although most of them have been serving as scout masters or guide captains for more than two decades, they have not been exposed to any such vigorous training so far. Interestingly, many of them represent schools located in interior villages - indicating the fact that the movement is shortly to benefit thousands of rural pupils. The five-day programme, which concluded on Sunday, included intensive training on first aid, rescuing the needy with chair-knot and preparing the bandage within split seconds for fracture and head injury. A scout master from the Government Higher Secondary School, Sevalpatti, at Thuvarankurichi in Tiruchi district, M. Kalaiarasan said that although he had been associated with the movement for more than two decades, he did not undergo such a rigorous training before. Expressing a similar view, another guide captain, Alphonsa from Keeramangalam in Pudukottai district, said she would share the techniques with her guides. "Apart from training the scouts and guides, the teachers would impart the skills to other masters and captains", pointed out A.M. Usman Ali one of the trainers. "We were surprised to witness over the interest from the masters and the captains from interior villages", says the district president of Bharat Scouts and Guides, S. Chinnappa and the district secretary, V. Gunaseelan. The Chief Educational Officer, V. Rajarajeswari, who is also the Assistant State Commissioner, Bharat Scouts and Guides, pointed out that the movement has been gaining momentum in recent years in the central region. The `Ambulanceman' training would facilitate the students to qualify for the Rashtrapathi award, she says.
