NEW DELHI: Anwer Sultan led with a 49 out of 50 on the opening day of the trap competition in the Asian clay shooting championship at the National Shooting Centre in Singapore on Sunday. Anwer had rounds of 24 and 25 as he emerged the sole leader in a strong field of 53 shooters. World champion Manavjit Singh Sandhu had problems with the slow release of targets at the first range and thus could compile only a 47 out of 50, with rounds of 23 and 24. Mansher Singh had identical rounds of 23 for a 46, while Birendeep Sodhi and Zorawar Singh Sandhu shot 46 and 39 respectively in the Minimum Qualifying Score (MQS) section. Defending champion India led the 11 teams in the fray with a 142 out of 150, two points ahead of China. Three more rounds of 25 followed by the final will be shot on Monday.
The results: Women's trap event: 1. Yukie Nakayama (Jpn) 84 (21); 2. Zhou Chao (Chn) 83 (18) 1; 3. Wang Yu JIn (Chn) 83 (19) 0; 8. Shagun Chowdhary (Ind) 61.
