NEW DELHI: Music and dance connoisseurs in the Capital can now look forward to a special treat. A Vietnamese cultural event showcasing music and dance will be held at Kamani Auditorium here this Tuesday as part of Vietnam's 61st National Day celebrations. The origin of Vietnamese music can be traced back to nearly 4,000 years. Although similar to the music of other Southeast Asian countries, it is distinct in terms of style, composition, mood, modal system and performance. Vietnamese music varies not only from other Asian music, but it also varies within itself. Ranging from ritual music, chamber music, ensemble music, folk music to theatre and poetry accompaniment, Vietnamese music also differs depending on the regional traits found in the music. These traits identify the music as originating in the North, Central, South or Highland region of Vietnam. There is no harmony per se in Vietnamese traditional music. In fact, the musicians employ complicated rhythms to accompany and enrich the melodies. Vietnamese musical instruments give the composer and performer a greater range of pitch, often with the assistance of different "ornaments". Interestingly, there are over 50 different Vietnamese musical instruments that are divided into three main groups -- strings, winds and percussions. Dan Nguyet, a two-stringed lute with a flat, circular body, is related to the Chinese "Moon Lute" instrument, while Dan Tranh is a 16-string zither with high and movable bridges. The significance of Vietnamese folk dance intensifies with the festivities. Ranging from depictions of simple leisure activities to those of the supernatural, the folk dance has various forms. It also reflects the people's beliefs, desires, hope, affection and love.
