BANGALORE: A group of persons, including former Ministers B.K. Chandrashekhar and G. Parameshwara, will file a public interest litigation petition urging the Supreme Court to direct the Centre to protect forest wealth in Bellary district and elsewhere in the State which is being exploited without obtaining "prior approval" from the authorities concerned.
Illegal mining
Prof. Chandrashekhar and Dr. Parameshwara told presspersons here on Saturday that illegal mining was rampant in the forest land in the State, particularly in Bellary district. The Union Government had powers to take action to protect the forests, they said.
Report
The former Ministers said that the Centre could act on the basis of a report on illegal mining in State submitted to the Government by Minister for Forests, Ecology and Environment C. Chennigappa.
Action sought
They said the public interest litigation petition would be filed by a group of like-minded persons and not by the Congress. They demanded that action be initiated against illegal mining in the State.
