KOZHIKODE: The get-together of neo-literates, under the aegis of the District Literacy Mission, Kozhikode, turned out to be an occasion for them to showcase their skills in the cultural field too. The get-together was held in connection with World Literacy Day. The symbolic item `Aksharathoni,' got up by a nine-member all-women troupe of neo-literates, at the Tagore Hall here on September 2 drew all-round appreciation from the 1,200-strong audience. Some of the women in the group were well past 70 years. Theyyams were also performed at the get-together. Though the majority of the neo-literates were women, the oldest among them was 84-year - old Bappu. Certificates were distributed to the neo-literates for the various examinations conducted in three stages. As many as 725 of those who had enlisted in the continuing education programme had passed the examination equivalent to standard 1V. Thirty-nine neo-literates had passed the class VII-equivalent examination, and 45 the class X-equivalent examination. According to the District Literacy Mission sources, more than 1,968 neo-literates have registered for the class IV-equivalent examination. More than 650 neo-literates besides `preraks' from all blocks in the district were present at the day-long programme. Mayor M. Bhaskaran inaugurated the programme. District panchayat president K.P. Kunahmedkutty presided. District Literacy Mission Coordinator M.D. Valsala presented the report. A seminar on `Continuing education programme and social improvement' was held in the backdrop of the proposed State policy on continuing education. State Planning Board member C.P. Narayanan moderated. K.K. Krishna Kumar, K. Sreedharan and P. Gopakumar presented papers on the subject.
