Out-patient clinic opened

Staff Reporter

Part of Corporation's palliative care programme

KOZHIKODE: Industries Minister Elamaram Kareem inaugurated an out-patient clinic set up in the city as part of a palliative care programme initiated by the Corporation of Kozhikode to provide free health care to terminally-ill patients afflicted with cancer, AIDS and other painful diseases.

The project is being implemented in association with the Pain and Palliative Care Clinic functioning at the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital. Mayor M. Bhaskaran presided.

The Corporation's project had initiated a training programme for volunteers. The volunteers were asked to spare at least two hours a week or one day a month to attend to patients. Besides providing basic medical assistance, they would also be called upon to do counselling for both patients and members of the patient's family.

Dr. Suresh Kumar, consultant at the Pain and Palliative Care Clinic, presented the project. A study by the Institute of Palliative Medicine shows that one in five houses has terminally-ill patients. They were not getting treatment or care because of financial difficulties and lack of proper guidance.

The Corporation has already begun the system of doctors, paramedical staff and the volunteers visiting patients at their homes, as the first phase of the project.
