HYDERABAD: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy has said that the Government would overcome legal hurdles and implement common service rules for teachers. Although the Andhra Pradesh Administrative Tribunal had stayed the rule order, the Government would strive to see that the benefits reached teachers, he said at a function organised by the Progressive Recognised Teachers' Union to felicitate its president B.Mohan Reddy, who retired after serving the union for over 26 years. Despite budgetary restrictions, the Government had never disappointed employees, and teachers, he said. "The Government is keen that all demands in the agreement signed by the unions are implemented in true spirit," he added. He referred to the salary hike of the vocational teachers and home guards from a paltry Rs. 2,000 a month. The Chief Minister said the Government was also considering whether land could be provided to employees, teachers and workers for building houses. He praised the PRTU leader for acting as a bridge between the unions and the Government.
Support teachers
Finance Minister K. Rosaiah said Mr. Reddy and other union leaders had effectively raised issues concerning them without resorting to a strike. The Government always responded to `reasonable' demands. Home Minister K. Jana Reddy hoped that Mr. Reddy would continue to support the cause of teachers even after retirement. The Chief Minister felicitated Mr. Reddy and his wife Bharati, watched by hundreds of PRTU members from districts. He presented the keys of a new car given by the union to the leader. The PRTU presented a memorandum to Dr. Reddy seeking enhanced earned leave from six to 20 days, besides giving two notional increments to apprentice teachers.
