Letters to the Editor
The concept of creamy layer in the context of 27 per cent reservation for the OBCs is a myth. There is a widespread belief that economic affluence is a criterion to get a seat in the IITs and the IIMs. If it is true, the rich among the OBCs would have bought admissions in them. The OBCs are still educationally backward because education has been denied to them for centuries. The argument that an OBC Class I government official can get admission for his children in such elite institutions is misplaced.
D.G. Sekar,
The existing system is divisive and unjust. It keeps the caste factor alive and caters predominantly to the creamy layer of the reserved categories.
Koti Sreekrishna,
Social justice can never be realised by suppressing the interests of economically backward meritorious candidates of all communities.
V.V. Naganathan,
Since politicians have decided to divide the country on the basis of quota, let us request them to make it complete. They can reserve a percentage of seats for the forward castes too. This will stifle the protests and also pave the way for people of different castes to compete among themselves. Our leaders can achieve their objective of appeasing the protesters and dividing the populace.
