LUCKNOW: Three sitting MLAs of the Bharatiya Janata Party Mahendra Singh Yadav, Amarjit Singh Jansewak and Shyam Singh Aheriya on Sunday joined the Samajwadi Party. PWD and Energy Minister Shivpal Singh Yadav announced this at a press meet here. The Minister said the MLAs had met Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav before the announcement was made. While Mr. Mahendra Singh Yadav is an MLA from Bulandhshahr, Mr. Amarjit Singh Jansewak and Mr. Shyam Singh Aheriya are MLAs from Bindki in Fatehpur district and Goverdhan in Mathura district respectively. With their switching over to the ruling party, the strength of the BJP in the Assembly has come down to 80. Appreciating the three-year tenure of the Chief Minister, Mr. Mahendra Singh Yadav lauded the steps taken for improving the lot of the deprived sections. He said the Samajwadi Party was the best instrument for public welfare and more popular than the BJP. Earlier, two other MLAs, Sandeep Agarwal of the BJP and Shamimul Haque of the Congress, had joined the Samajwadi Party. When contacted, the Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, Lalji Tandon, told The Hindu that a petition seeking the termination of the membership of the three BJP MLAs would be moved with the Speaker in the next couple of days. "The process would be set in motion once State BJP president Kesari Nath Tripathi returns to Lucknow," Mr. Tandon said.
