KOTTAYAM: Minister for Tourism Kodiyeri Balakrishnan on Sunday said the Government would initiate steps to get the Central Government to approve a new tourism circuit with Kumarakom as the centre. He inaugurated the district-level Onam-Tourism Week Celebrations here. Mr. Balakrishnan said there was scope for pilgrim tourism in the district. "Tourism has emerged as an industry," he said. Effective strategies such as monsoon tourism and Ayurveda tourism packages have helped promote Kerala as a tourist destination the year round. Domestic and foreign tourists can visit Kerala any time of the year and get a feel of its cultural heritage and scenic beauty, he said. The Government plans to involve the Panchayati Raj institutions in the development of the industry next year, Mr. Balakrishnan said. V.N. Vasavan, MLA, presided over the function. MLAs Mons Joseph, K. Ajith, District Collector Raju Narayana Swamy spoke. Competitions in pookkalam and onappattu were held. Cultural programmes too were organised. The celebrations commenced in the evening with a Chakyarkoothu performance by Pala K.R. Moni and dance recital by actor Shobhana. Celebrations will continue till September 9.
