Pondy Assembly Speaker all praise for members

Special Correspondent

Says they maintained decorum during the session

Pondicherry: Before adjourning the budget session of the Pondicherry Assembly on Friday (September 1), the Speaker, R. Radhakrishnan, was all praise for members for maintaining decorum during the entire session.

The session, which lasted for 23 days, transacted several important business and members of both ruling and opposition parties were happy as all their pleas found instant approval by the Chief Minister N. Rangasamy.

Right from the beginning of the session on July 27 the issues concerning students, unemployed youth, industrial workers, farmers and also those belonging to weaker sections were projected during question hour or during debates and discussions through resolutions.

Thanks to the Government decision, no student need to bear the burden of paying the tuition fees for their professional courses as the Government has come forward to meet the entire expenditure of tuition fees on their behalf.

As far as remittances of "other fees" (outside the tuition fees) levied by private medical colleges the Chief Minister announced at one stage what amount should students actually pay under this category.

These fees relating to medical colleges were decided through a meeting with the representatives of the managements of private medical colleges here.

It was the relentless plea of almost all members that the Government should spare no efforts to finalise a reasonable structure of "other fees" as the medical college managements were levying higher fees. Chief Minister intervened and had the matter settled through the Fees Committee. This was a big boon to students.

Loans borrowed by farmers from cooperative institutions and totalling around Rs. 28 crore were also waived. Candidates waiting for jobs for a long time for the post of teachers would also be shown some consideration for posting.
