Staff Reporter

TIRUPATI: `Sahasra Narikela Theerthabhisheka Mahotsavam' was performed to Vepanjeri Sri Lakshminarayana Swamy at the S.V. Children's High School premises in Bhavani Nagar here on Sunday.

The priests, accompanied by pundits specially brought from Sri Ranganathaswamy temple in Nellore conducted the ritual and gave a celestial bath to the deity with water from 1008 tender coconuts. Devotees, who took part in large numbers, also offered coconuts.

"Performing `abhishekam' to the Lord, that to with tender coconut, on `Ekadasi' day is considered auspicious. It is aimed at cooling the deity, seeking His blessings and propitiating Him to bestow rain, global peace and well-being," temple trustee K.S. Sridhar said.

Earlier, the deity was brought in a procession from the Sri Lakshminarayana temple at Reddy and Reddy colony here. It may be noted that this deity is a replica of the ancient temple situated in Vepanjeri village near Chittoor, which is visited by thousands of pilgrims everyday.
