Madurai: Kancheepuram won the overall championship with a tally of 520 points in the 21st Tamil Nadu State junior inter-district athletics meet organised by the Madurai District Athletic Association at the Railway stadium here on Sunday. Chennai finished second with a total of 266 points. In the boys' section, Kancheepuram finished with 251 points, while Chennai finished second with 171. In the girls' section too Kancheepuram finished first with 269 points, while Erode came second with 196. In all 14 meet records were shattered and G. Gayathiri (Kancheepuram) scored a golden double as she set new records in the girls' u-16 pentathlon and 100m hurdles. She totalled 2,927 points in pentathlon to erase the old record of 2,822 points and in hurdles she clocked 14.4s bettering the old record of 15.6s. Mr. M. Chidambarasamy, Commissioner of Police, gave away the prizes, in the presence of Mr. W. Davaram, President TNAA, and Mr. Selva Ganesh, Additional Director of Income tax (Investigation). Thiagarajar takes title
Thiagarajar College of Engineering, Madurai, beat PSNA College of Engineering, Dindigul, 3-0 for the title in the Anna University zone -10 inter-engineering men's table tennis tournament at Vikram College of Engineering campus on Saturday. The results (Final): TCE bt PSNA 3-0 (Ramesh bt Vajavel 9-11, 6-11, 11-6, 11-4, 11-7; B.K. Subramani bt Senthil 11-6, 11-7, 12-14, 11-9; John bt K. Saravanan 11-1, 11-2, 11-5. Loyola College wins
Loyola College, Chennai, lifted the Rev. Fr. J. Prince Memorial Trophy defeating St. Joseph's College, Tiruchi, 4-1 via tie-breaker in the final of the State-level inter-collegiate football tournament organised by Arulanandar College at the college ground, Karumathur on Saturday. At the end of regulation time, the teams were locked goalless. Earlier in the semifinals, Loyola College prevailed over Jamal Mohamed College, Tiruchi 7-6 via tie-breaker, after the teams shared six goals in regulation time and St. Joseph's College beat Saraswathy Narayanan College, Madurai 3-0. Mr. P. Malaiappan, Divisional Consumer Sales Manager, IOC gave away the prizes in the presence of Rev.Fr. Pushparaj, Principal of the college. The results (Final): Loyola College 4 (Ilamurugan, Pradeep, Vinod Kumar, Syed) bt St. Joseph's College (Habib). MIET is champion
Mohammed Faisal took four wickets as MIET Polytechnic defeated Pattukottai Polytechnic by four runs in the final of the inter-polytechnic cricket tournament in Tiruchi on Sunday. The scores: MIET Polytechnic 96 for six in 16 overs bt Pattukottai Polytechnic 92 for six in 16 overs (Mohammed Faisal four for 12).
