KOLLAM: Labour Minister P.K. Gurudasan inaugurated the Onam celebrations at the district jail here on Sunday. Director of Quilon Social Service Society Romance Antony presided. All the 148 male inmates and 12 women inmates attended the celebrations. A team of jail inmates formally received Mr. Gurudasan, with one of them dressed as Mahabali. In his inaugural address, Mr. Gurudasan said urgent steps would be taken to improve the condition of jails in the State. Jails should function as centres to reform criminals and integrate them into mainstream society. He said the majority of jail inmates were those who had committed crime due to circumstances. Only a few were criminal minded. Two women inmates have their infant daughters staying with them in jail. One is five-month-old Aishwarya, daughter of Sreedevi, and the other one-and-a-half-year-old Tulasi, daughter of Kaliamma. Sreedevi was delivered of her child while serving prison term. Cultural programmes presented by the inmates.
