Vineeth's century props up Pathanamthitta


  • Half-centuries by Anish Rajalingam (83), S. Anish (70) and Ajith Balan (53)
  • Sambasiva Sharma's breezy knock helps Thiruvananthapuram take the first innings lead

    KOTTAYAM: A fine century by N. Vineeth (108) carried Pathanamthitta to a position of strength against Alappuzha on the opening day of the two-day South Zone inter-district U-22 cricket tournament at the Nehru Stadium here on Monday.

    Batting first, Pathanamthitta's innings revolved around Vineeth's century and half-centuries from Anish Rajalingam (83), S. Anish (70) and Ajith Balan (53). Pathanamthitta scored 395 runs before being dismissed in the 78th over. In reply, Alappuzha was 33 for one at stumps.

    At the Medical College ground, a breezy knock by Sambasiva Sharma (79 not out) saw Thiruvananthapuram take the first innings lead against Kollam. After bundling out Kollam for 167 in 48 overs, Thiruvananthapuram had taken a 10-run lead at draw of stumps.

    The scores: Pathanamthitta 395 in 77.2 overs (N. Vineeth 108, Anish Rajalingam 83, S. Anish 70, Ajith Balan 53, Sandeep five for 53, Sathil three for 64) vs. Alappuzha 33 for one in 10 overs; Kollam 167 in 47.4 overs (Zulfikar Sr. 41, Ratish 30 not out, Anoop three for 17, Madan Mohan two for 53, S.R. Aneez two for 39) vs. Thiruvananthapuram 177 for six in 40 overs (Sambasiva Sharma 79 not out, P. Prasanth 35, Abdul Samad two for 11, Zulfikar Jr. two fro 37, Zulfikar Sr. two for 51).

    South takes lead

    At Thiruvananthapuram, South Zone took a 38-run the first innings lead against Central Zone on the second day of the State inter-zone under-19 cricket tournament at the LNCPE ground on Sunday.

    Half-century by captain M.E. Sanuth (50) and useful contributions from Tinku Satish (40) and Nimish Latheef (34) enabled the host to overcome a mid innings slump to overhaul Central Zone's first innings total of 205 runs.

    But Central Zone hit back to take an overall lead of 93 runs at stumps with Pious K. Joseph unbeaten on 64.

    The scores: Central Zone 205 & 131 for two in 42 overs (Pious K. Joseph 64 n.o.) vs. South Zone 243 in 75.2 overs (M.E. Sanuth 50, Tinku Satish 40, Nimish Latheef 34, Ramesh four for 66, Praveen Achuthan three for 29).

    Fernandes scalps five

    At Kochi, Robert Fernandes took five wickets as Ernakulam bowled out Palakkad for 162 on the opening day of the two-day Central Zone under-22 inter-district cricket championship at the Kochi Refinery Oval, Ambalamugal, on Sunday.

    In another match, at St Paul's College Ground, Idukki's Ryan came up with a fine allround show (5-94 and 69 n.o.) against Thrissur.

    The scores: Palakkad 162 in 59.5 overs (Sajith Muralidharan 44, Robert Fernandes five for 34, Vinil K. Wilson four for 26) v Ernakulam 119 for six in 28 overs (Sreekumar 51, Indrajit three for 14) at Ambalamugal.

    Thrissur 276 in 69.5 overs (Uvais 68, Hari 47 n.o., Sherimon 44, Ryan five for 94) v Idukki 146 for two in 24 overs (Ryan 69 n.o., Shiju 32) at Kalamassery.

    Saturday's scores: Ernakulam 329 & 70 for two decl. drew with Thrissur 104 in 40.1 overs (Arun Alex 38, Midhun three for 10, V.S.Sunil three for 18) & 165 for four (Uwais 66, Davis Manavalan 42, Vinil K. Wilson three for 24). Ekm 2 pts for first innings lead, Thrissur 0.

    Idukki 356 & 66 for six drew with Palakkad 216 in 63 overs (Sajith Muraleedharan 68, Rishal 52). Idukki 2 pts, Palakkad 0.

    Sanave to lead

    Ernakulam's Sanave Thomas and Kozhikode's Aparna Balan will lead the Kerala men's and women's teams at the South Zone badminton championships to be held in Kozhikode from Sept. 29.

    According to KBA secretary S. Muralidharan, a preparatory camp for the selected players would be held at the V.K. Krishna Menon Indoor Stadium in Kozhikode from Sept. 22 to 28.

    Geojit Cup from today

    Indian Overseas Bank (Chennai) and Central Excise (Kochi) will lead the challenge in the men's section of the Geojit Cup all-India invitation basketball tournament, which begins at the Rajiv Gandhi Indoor Stadium here on Monday.

    Seven teams each in the men's and women's sections will figure in the six-day event organised by the Regional Sports Centre. The tournament will be held on a league-cum-knockout basis with the top two teams entering the semifinals. A veteran men's event will also be held simultaneously.

    The groupings: Men: Group A: IOB (Che), Southern Railway (Che), BSNL (Tvm), Vijaya Bank (Ban). Group B: Central Excise (Koc), MEG (Ban), South East Central Railway (Bil). Women: Group A: Western Railway (Mum), SAI (Tha), Thiruvananthapuram, Southern Railway (Che). Group B: Central Railway (Mum), St. Xavier's College (Alu), South East Central Railway.

    Valeed stars for Kannur

    At Thalassery, leg-spinner N.V. Valeed finished with a match haul of 10 wickets to lead Kannur to an innings and 62-run win over Malappuram in the North Zone inter-district U-22 cricket championship here on Sunday.

    The scores: Malappuram 165 & 141 in 35.5 overs (Praveen 38, N.V. Valeed five for 32, Mazhar Moidu three for 35) lost to Kannur 368 in 86.3 overs (K.P. Anirudh 98 not out, Diju Das 72, Nijil 48, Ashraf four for 60, Jamsheed three for 44). — Principal Correspondent
