Programmes for Onam at Vadakara, Koyilandy

Folk arts to be performed in cultural procession


  • Bike rally to campaign against drug abuse
  • Sports competitions to be held as part of the festivities

    KOZHIKODE: The Onam celebrations organised by the Department of Tourism and District Tourism Promotion Council will also be held in Vadakara, Koyilandy and Thusharagiri.

    The venues of the programmes in Vadakara are the Town Hall, Krishnakripa Auditorium, St. Antony's Girls HS, Basket Ball Ground and new bus stand premises. P. Sathidevi, MP, will inaugurate the Onam celebration at Payamkuttimalayil in Vadakara at 4 p.m. on Monday. Vadakara municipal chairman T.P. Chandran will preside.

    `Thacholikali,' `kalaripayattu,' `Nadanpattu,' music concert by Mathangi Satyamurthi, `ottan thullal' by Muchukunnu Padmanabhan and party, a play, `Maram Peiyunnu' by Nanma Vengeri, `seethankan thullal,' `parayan thullal,' `kuthirakkolam,' `ishal nisha' by V.M. Kutty and party, `oppana,' `pottan theyyam,' `thiruvathirakali,' `pulluvan pattu,' `thiri uzhichil' `mudiyettu,' `nanyarkoothu,' ghazal, `kathaprasangam,' `padayani, and `poorakali' will be held at various venues from Monday to Thursday.

    Procession on Wednesday

    The cultural procession scheduled on Wednesday will include tableaux of various panchayats in the taluk and the municipality. The procession will start from Narayanan Nagar at 3 p.m. and terminate at Town Hall at 6 p.m. An exhibition of agricultural produce will be held at the B.Ed. Centre in Vadakara on Tuesday and Wednesday. Forest Minister Benoy Viswom will be the chief guest at the valedictory function at Town Hall on Thursday.

    River procession

    A river procession will be held at Korappuzha on Monday and on the Murad river in Kottakkal on Tuesday, both in Koyilandy municipality.

    Swimming contests will be held at Koyilandy, Balusserry, Perambra and Kottakkal and contests\performances in `kalaripayattu,' `kolkali,' `dufmutt,' `bharathanatyam,' `kuchipudi,' orchestra, drama, painting camp for children, tug-of-war and cross country will be held.

    A. Pradeepkumar, MLA, will inaugurate the celebrations at Thusharagiri at 4 p.m. on Monday.

    A floral carpet contest will be held at 9 a.m. on Monday followed by a bike rally propagating a campaign against drug abuse from Kodencherry to Thusharagiri at 9.15 a.m.

    Photo exhibition

    An exhibition of photographs will be held at 11 a.m., followed by trekking at 11.30 a.m., sports contests at 12 noon, tug-of-war among women followed by bharathanatyam, kuchupudi, cinematic dance and Sinkari melam performances on Monday.

    Eating contest

    Eating contest, `thayambaka,' `theyyam' and `Sinkarimelam' will be held in the morning on Tuesday at Thusharagiri.

    The valedictory function to be held at 3.30 p.m. will be inaugurated by district panchayat president K.P. Kunhahammedkutty.

    Meanwhile, Balusserry grama panchayat has already started Onam tourism celebrations in association with the Department of Tourism from September 1.

    The week-long programmes will conclude on Thursday with a colourful cultural procession at 3.30 p.m. marking an end to the celebrations.
