Vasan harps on Kamaraj rule

Youth Congress meet in Madurai

MADURAI : "The Congress has emerged as a power in determining the fate of regional parties in the State. Only hard work by cadres can bring back the Kamaraj rule in Tamil Nadu," said G. K. Vasan, party leader and Union Minister of State for Statistics and Programme Implementation.

Addressing the Tamil Nadu Youth Congress State conference here on Sunday, Mr. Vasan said the party had been out of power in the State for nearly 40 years. However, it still remained a vibrant force only because of its youth wing. It was undisputable that the party had a bright future in Tamil Nadu, he said. "We have to upgrade our status so as to form the Kamaraj rule, which gave importance to education, industrial and agricultural development, only through hard work, a major trait of the late leader."

The aim of the conference was to strengthen the hands of Rahul Gandhi, bring back the Kamaraj rule and take the beneficial schemes of the Union Government to the masses. The United Progressive Alliance Government has given Rs. 35,292 crore to the State to implement 55 welfare schemes. Tamil Nadu is the State, which has benefited the most by the Union Government, he noted.

Union Minister of State for Urban Development Ajay Makhan said that the Union Government's programme had as focussed on the uplift of the poorest of the poor. The Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission was being implemented in 63 select cities in the country, including Madurai.

All India Youth Congress president Ashok Tanwar urged the State Congress unit to give more opportunities to the Youth Congress members to contest in the forthcoming elections to the local bodies in Tamil Nadu. He released the first edition of a monthly party organ, "Youth Congress Express".

State Youth Congress president Mayura S. Jeyakumar, MPs E.M. Sudarsanam Nachiayppan, B. Gnanadesigan, N.S.V. Chitthan and Narayanasamy spoke.
