Four killed in accident

VIRUDHUNAGAR: Four persons, including two women, were killed at the Aathipatti junction near Aruppukottai when a State-run bus ploughed through a group of people waiting at a bus stop on Sunday. V. Subramani (65) was admitted to the Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai.

D. Nallaiyan (35), his wife N. Shanthi (30) of Aathipatti and P. Adammal (60) of Chempatti died on the spot. M. Boominathan (30), who was rushed to the Aruppukottai Government Hospital, died there. The police said R. Ayyamperumal, driver of the Aruppukottai-Mudukolathur bus, swerved the vehicle to the extreme right to avoid hitting a motorcyclist, who suddenly crossed the road. The driver lost control and knocked down the people standing at the bus stop. The bus stopped only after hitting a nearby electric transformer, badly damaging it. — Staff Reporter

Coast Guard rescues fishermen

CHENNAI: Coast Guard on Saturday rescued four fishermen, who had been adrift in the Gulf of Mannar for four days. Coast Guard Ship Naikidevi, which was on routine patrol in the Gulf of Mannar, located fishing boat RMS Mini Changodi (VOC No. 3419) about 20 km south east of Manappad on on Saturday. The boat with crew had been adrift for past four days following an engine failure. The fishermen had exhausted their rations and water and appeared weak. The CG medical team provided medical help, food and water. The ship, despite the rough and heavy sea, took the boat under tow. The boat, along with its crew, was towed to the Tuticorin port and handed over to the Fisheries Department on Saturday. — Special Correspondent

Implement satellite town project: DPI

CHENNAI: The Dalit Panthers of India on Sunday urged the State Government not to go back on its proposal to create a satellite town in Kancheepuram district.

In a statement here, DPI general secretary Thol. Thirumavalavan said creation of a satellite town with all basic facilities was essential in view of an increasing traffic congestion and growing population in Chennai. "We appeal to the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Government to be firm on its plan to create the satellite town," he said. — Special Correspondent

Engineers seek pay parity with IT sector

CHENNAI: A body representing engineers of State Governments and members of the Central Engineering Service has expressed its concern over the growing neglect of the professionals. It has sought constitution of an Engineering Commission to look into their remuneration and service conditions. The Indian Engineers' Federation wants engineers to be made heads of technical departments and government undertakings and removal of disparities in career values between the engineering and administrative services.

A resolution, passed by the Federation at the mid-term council meeting of its southern regional unit here on Sunday, said it would make a representation to the Sixth Pay Commission stressing the need for pay-scales to the professionals on a par with those in the information technology sector. Farmer murdered

TIRUNELVELI : Veeravanallur police are on the lookout for a gang, which murdered a farmer on Sunday.

The police said C. Kannan (33) of Kutti Nagar near Kaarukurichi was murdered by Mariappan, Kumar, Ganesan, Subramanian and two others of the same area in April, owing to enmity.

Since the father of the deceased, P. Chellaiah (60), was cited as an eyewitness in the murder case, the assailants, who were recently released on bail, threatened him not to tender witness in the case. But he refused.

Body recovered

Nagercoil : The police recovered the body of a 13-year-old boy with head injuries from a coconut grove near Pudukadai on Sunday.

According to the police, Lajees, son of Lawrence, was studying in Standard VII in a school near Pudukadai. He went to Vannanvillai along with his friends to participate in a church festival. Meanwhile, two persons abducted him. Later, his friends informed his parents, who lodged a complaint.

Rain in Kanyakumari district

Nagercoil : Various parts of Kanyakumari district witnessed widespread rain on Saturday.

The maximum amount of rainfall of 31 mm was recorded at Surulode followed by 19.2 in Perunchani, 12 in Kannimar, 4 in Boothapandi, 3.2 in Pechipparai, 2.2 in Chittar I and 1.2 in Chittar II.

Water level

The level in the Pechipparai dam stood at 31.30 feet against the total capacity of 48 feet, 35.35 feet in Perunchani against the total capacity of 77 feet, 5.50 feet in Chittar I against the total capacity of 18 feet and 5.67 feet in Chittar II against the total capacity of 18 feet.

Refugees arrive

at Tuticorin

TUTICORIN : A total of 20 Sri Lankan refugees of six families, who reached Arichamunai on July 4, reached here on Sunday as the Mandapam refugee camp is overflowing. They have settled at Ramadoss Nagar.

Two arrested

TIRUNELVELI : The police arrested two persons and are looking for five more in a dowry harassment case.

The police said T. Rajalakshmi of Velappanaadaanoor was married to M. Lingasamy alias Kumar (22) in 2004. Though the parents gave Rs.10,000 in cash and 150 gm golden ornaments, the groom and his relatives demanded Rs.50,000 more. As Rajalakshmi refused, they reportedly tortured her.

Based on a complaint from the victim, the police arrested Lingasamy and his relative, M. Mariammal (38). — Staff Reporter

Stalin to review development works

NAGAPATTINAM: M.K. Stalin, Minister for Local Administration, will review rural development works being carried out in the district here on Tuesday.

Mr. Stalin, during his visit, will give assistance to women self-help groups, inaugurate several development works, hand over permanent houses for tsunami victims built by a non-governmental organisation and lay foundation stone for school buildings to be built by another NGO.

Re-totalling leads to new district topper

NAGAPATTINAM: C. Madhumitha of Raj Matriculation Higher Secondary School in Mayiladuturai has secured the first rank in Nagapattinam district in the matriculation public examinations held in March this year by securing 1042 marks out of 1100 marks after the revision of her marks.

According to Education Department officials, Madhumitha who got 1037 marks and declared the second rank holder after the results were announced in June this year, has now got five more marks in Science after re-totalling.

As a result, C. Saranya of the same school, who secured 1039 marks and was declared the first ranker, now takes the second position. K. Aishwarya of Gurugnanasambandar Matriculation HSS, Mayiladuturai, secured the third rank by scoring 1031 marks.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The level at the Mettur dam stood at 113.21 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Sunday. The inflow was 9,568 cusecs, and the outflow 16,772 cusecs.

Rice seized, mill sealed

ERODE: A mill in the Uthukuli R.S. area was sealed for keeping 6,395 kg of rice meant for the Public Distribution System outlets. Collector D. Karthikeyan said that on information the Food Cell Police, Revenue Civil Supplies Flying Squad and Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies officials raided the mill on Friday and found that rice was kept in 103 bags for transportation to other States. The officials seized the rice bags. A search is on for lessee R. Velusamy. - Staff Reporter

Raids on cinemas

Erode: Labour Welfare Department officials raided 27 cinema theatres in Erode, Bhavani, Perundurai, Kangeyam, Dharapuram, Sathyamangalam and Gobichettipalayam. They enquired employees whether they were given salaries fixed by the Government. It was found that 31 employees in 13 theatres were not given the fixed salary.

The officials registered cases against the theatre owners and instructed them to pay the due salary to the employees. The raids were conducted under the supervision of Labour Inspector C. Thangavel. - Staff Reporter

Found dead

ATTUR: The body of a schoolgirl was found in a well here on Sunday. Police said Anbulakshmi (15) of Thulukkanur, a student studying Standard X in a school, was missing since Saturday. When her parents searched, she was found dead in a well. A case has been registered in this connection. - Staff Reporter

Man dies

SALEM: A 62-year-old man, who sustained serious injuries in a road accident and was admitted to the Salem Government Medical College hospital, died on Saturday. Police said Ramasamy of Puliyampatti Medu was returning home when a car dashed against his cycle. - Staff Reporter

Residents block road

ATTUR: Residents of the Karutharajapalayam laid siege to a private town bus for not stopping in their village near here on Saturday.

More than 200 residents blocked the road and demanded the district officials to direct the driver of the bus to stop in their village. The Malliakkarai police rushed to spot and pacified the agitators. - Staff Reporter
