Holiday on September 6

HYDERABAD: The State Government has declared September 6 as general holiday to its offices, schools and colleges located in the city and Ranga Reddy district on account of the Ganesh idol immersion procession. An official release said, consequently September 9 (second Saturday) will be a working day, in lieu of September 6. - Special Correspondent

One-year PGDIPR

HYDERABAD: The Department of Law, Osmania University, is offering a self-financing one-year PG Diploma in Intellectual Property Rights (PGDIPR) at the PG College of Law, Basheerbagh during evening time. Admission will be based on an entrance examination to be conducted on September 24. Candidates with any degree recognised as equivalent to OU degree are eligible. There are 80 seats of which 20 are in the sponsored category. Course fee for sponsored candidates is Rs. 8,000 while it is Rs. 6,000 for others. Applications can be had from the Principal, University College of Law, OU. Last date for submission of forms is September 11. - Staff Reporter

Best teacher award

HYDERABAD: The Professor T. Navaneeth Rao National Best Teacher Award for 2006 will be presented to E.D. Jemmis, Department of Inorganic Chemistry and Physical Chemistry, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, on September 5 here for `significant' contribution to chemistry.

The Andhra Pradesh Akademy of Sciences in association with Dr. A.V. Rama Rao Research Foundation and Indian Institute of Chemical Technology instituted the award. The presentation function will be held at IICT, said B. Satyanarayana, honorary secretary of the akademi. - Special Correspondent

Scholarships for STs

HYDERABAD: The Ministry of Tribal Affairs has proposed to grant 10 scholarships to ST students for pursuing Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) course. The Director-General of Civil Aviation will select the students through a written test. This will be in addition to the scholarship scheme of DGCA for 40 SC/ST students for the course, according to an official release. Application forms are available on the website www.tribal.nic.in. They can also be obtained from the office of Deputy Secretary (Education division, room No.218 D), Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Shastri Bhavan, New Delhi. - Special Correspondent

Four die in suicide pact

KADAPA: A former Congress MPTC member N. Anuradha (30) and her three daughters died in a suicide pact in Parvathareddigaripalle village in Lakkireddipalle mandal on Saturday evening.

She allegedly gave pesticide to her daughters — Swetha (6), Vasavi (3) and Devi (1) — and later consumed it, according to the police. Her husband Chandrasekhar, an autorickshaw driver, was elected Dinnepadu panchayat ward member. Police suspect that financial problems could be the reason for the suicide pact. - Staff Reporter

Two killed in accident

KADAPA: Two persons died and five others sustained injuries and three houses were partly damaged when a lorry driver lost control of he vehicle and hit two vehicles and then rammed into houses at Santhinagar in Railway Kodur mandal on Saturday night. The lorry bound for Chennai hit an autorickshaw and a tractor and then fatally ran over Hussain Saheb (70) and Nabina (1) who were asleep before their houses, according to the police. Shamshad Bi, Khasim Bi, Bujjamma, Peeraiah and Sanjeevarayudu were hurt and were rushed to Ruia hospital at Tirupati. The lorry driver is absconding. - Staff Reporter

Cotton farmer ends life

ADILABAD: Mukkarapu Ashanna (48), a cotton farmer from Tamsi (K) village in Tamsi mandal, committed suicide by consuming poison on the night of September 2. According to information, the farmer ran into debts of Rs. 70,000 because of successive crop failure. - Staff Reporter

Chariot festival

CHITTOOR: The chariot festival of Sri Varasiddivinayaka Swamy at Kanipakam in Irala mandal was held on Sunday, the eight day of the temple's Brahmotsavam. Galla Aruna Kumari, MLA, took the silk clothes presented by the TTD along with the Trust Board Chairman Ramula Reddy and temple Executive Officer Sivaji and handed them over to the head priest. The processional deity was placed on the chariot amid music and chanting of vedic slokas by the priests. The devotees pulled the chains of the chariot around the streets of the temple. —

Blood donation camp

CHITTOOR: A blood donation camp was organised by Shirdi Viswasai Baba Charitable Trust Kattamanchi at Sai Baba temple here on Sunday.

It was inaugurated by C. K. Babu, former MLA. Some 100 youngsters of Mittoor area donated blood. The organisation will conduct a camp once in three months and hand it over to the Red Cross Society branch for helping needy patients free of cost. — Correspondent

Student's achievement

TIRUPATI: P. Akhila, a class XI class student of Sudhaha Little Citizens High School, Tirupati came first in the district science seminar conducted on the topic `Bio-diversity: prospects and concerns' at the Regional Science Centre here on Saturday. She will represent Chittoor district at the State science seminar to be held at Rajahmundry on September 19. Headmistress J. Hanumayamma congratulated the girl on her achievement. — Staff Reporter

Special award for astrologer

Kakinada : A special jury award was presented to D. Cherukupalli Lakshmi Nrusimha Sarma, a noted astrologer, also the Andhra Circle Governor of the All India Astrological Federation, at the three-day South Asian Astrological meet that concluded in Nepal on August 31, according to Y.V. Parasuram, representative of the federation. Former Prime Minister of Nepal Kendra Bahadur Chand presented the award to Dr Nrusimha Sarma. Over 1,000 astrologers from seven countries attended. — Correspondent

Documentary on 108 service

Kakinada : A five-minute documentary film on the 108 EMRI ambulance services was formally launched on Sunday.

District revenue officer Suryanarayana, the chief guest, said the 108 services were of great help in saving lives.

Even now many people were unaware of the service, as such, he said, the documentary was aimed at creating awareness among them.

The DRO said the 108 ambulance services, now available at three places - Kakinada, Rajahmundry and Amalapuram would soon be extended to places with 20,000 population with the arrival of 10 more ambulances by October. — Correspondent

Two killed in accident

Kakinada: Two persons - Vasu (27) a motorcyclist and Kanigiri Durgaprasad (22) pillion rider were killed when a speeding van dashed their two-wheeler near Rajanagaram centre on the ADB road under Rajanagaram police station limits on Sunday.

In another incident, Medisetti Lovaraju (30) a farm servant who suffered snakebite while sleeping in his house in Pallepalem village succumbed at the Government general hospital here in the early hours of Sunday.
