BANGALORE: Small gestures from the powerful that touch the hearts of the poorest make for interesting news, and there is one associated with the visit of Congress president Sonia Gandhi to the State. It turns out that a Youth Congress worker in a village in Koppal district, who was waiting with bated breath for the news of Ms. Gandhi becoming Prime Minister in May 2004, died of shock on learning that she had chosen against assuming office. The then KPCC president B. Janardhana Poojary had sanctioned Rs. 1 lakh to the parents of Suresh, and later some Koppal Congress workers had written to Ms. Gandhi too. She immediately wrote back, and extended some more financial assistance, and decreed that the elderly couple should be brought to meet her whenever she visited Karnataka. Erappa, father of Suresh, will cherish the meeting with Ms. Gandhi at the Kumara Krupa guest-house. On being told that Mr. Erappa had come, she walked up to welcome him, patted him and invited him to share lunch, and promised him that she and the Congress would always stand by him and his wife.
