`State keen on medical colleges in districts'

  • Rs. 15.25 crore has so far been released for the first phase of work on the medical college in Raichur

    Raichur: Minister for Medical Education V.S. Acharya has said the Government will promote setting up of medical colleges in Gadag, Haveri, Uttara Kannada, Kodagu, Chikmagalur and Koppal districts if proper infrastructure were put in place by the private managements.

    Addressing presspersons here on Sunday, he said the Government wanted improved medical facilities in all districts.

    Soon government medical colleges would come up in Belgaum, Mandya, Shimoga, Bidar, Raichur and Hassan districts. But there were no medical colleges in Gadag, Haveri, Uttara Kannada, Kodagu, Chikmagalur, Chamarajanagar and Koppal districts. The Government wanted medical colleges to be set up in these districts too. Private managements would be allowed to establish medical colleges in these areas if they were able to set up proper facilities. He said that three private institutions had come forward to establish a medical college in Karwar. To a question on the six government medical colleges, the Minister said that most of the work in Belgaum and Mandya had been completed.

    The civil works on other the proposed medical colleges in Shimoga, Bidar, Raichur and Hassan districts were in progress and they were planned to be completed by November.

    Dr. Acharya said the Government had so far released Rs.15.25 crore for the first phase of work on the medical college in Raichur. An additional Rs. 54 lakh had been released to acquire a site near the medical college for the construction of a block of the government civil hospital.
