Kumaraswamy's poser to Congressmen

Bangalore: Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy has sought to know the reason for the Congress to decide on holding Sunday's convention attended by its president Sonia Gandhi.

Reacting to the convention, he said that the Congress which failed to deliver when in power was now organising such meaningless conventions. He wondered what purpose would be served by the rally.

He was speaking to a television channel while attending a function held at a Hindu math. — Special Correspondent

Union Ministers from State must quit: Vatal

Bangalore: Kannada Chaluvaligar leader Vatal Nagaraj has demanded the resignation of the Union Ministers from the State in protest against the Centre's action in withdrawing the affidavit filed in the Supreme Court that the petition from Maharashtra with regard to the Belgaum dispute was not maintainable in law.

Speaking to presspersons, Mr. Nagaraj said that the Karnataka delegation led by Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy had demanded justice from the Centre after which the latter had filed an affidavit before the apex court.

Centre's action decried

HUBLI: The Akhila Karnataka Kendra Kannada Kriya Samiti has condemned what it termed as the "partisan stand" taken by the United Progressive Alliance Government with the regard to the border row between Karnataka and Maharashtra.

In a release issued here, honorary president of the samiti Channaveera Kanavi, president Chandrakanth Bellad, vice-presidents Guruling Kapase Giraddi Govindaraj and general secretary Mohan Nagammanavar termed the decision taken by the UPA Government to withdraw the earlier affidavit as a blow to the federal system in the country. — Staff Correspondent

Industrial policy faulted

Bangalore: The new industrial policy of the State has failed to focus on the revival and rehabilitation of sick industries which constitute 40 per cent of the industrial units in the State, the Institute of Parliamentary Affairs has noted.

Secretary to the institute M.C. Shanthamurthy said that it was a lapse on the part of the Government in formulating the new policy. The policy had also ignored the construction industry which had assumed importance on account of the urban boom. — Special Correspondent

Training programme

MYSORE: Krishik Sarvodaya Foundation is organising a month-long training programme for those aspiring to join call centres and Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) centres in Bangalore from September 25. MYSORE: The Handloom and Textiles Department has invited applications for a training programme in sewing from candidates aged between 18 and 25. According to a statement, the applicants should have passed eighth standard. Three killed in

road accident

HUBLI: Three persons were killed on the spot when the motorcycle they were travelling on collided with an oil tanker at Pale Cross near Hubli on Saturday night. Police gave the names of the victims as Siddanagouda Basanagoudar (42), Shankaragouda G. Shivanagouda (22) and Gurusiddappa B. Balappanavar (27) of Pale village. The Hubli Rural Police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

Toddy seized

RAICHUR: The Raichur police arrested Ramappa and Eranna and seized three kg of chloral hydrate powder and ten litres of toddy while they were selling it in Raichur city on Saturday. They have been remanded to judicial custody. The Sadar Bazar and the Marketyard Police have registered separate cases. The Raichur police arrested Manappa and seized ten litres of arrack from him while he was selling it in Hanumanthanayak Tanda in Deodurga taluk on Saturday. He has been remanded to judicial custody. Arrested

RAICHUR: The Raichur police have arrested 15 persons, including nine persons from Sindhanur town and six from Yergera village of Raichur taluk, on the charges of gambling and recovered Rs. 11,000 from them. All have been remanded to judicial custody. Separate cases have been registered with the Sindhanur Town and the Yergera Police Stations.

BIDAR: Prohibitory orders have been clamped around all centres here where the test to recruit primary school teachers is to be held on September 4.

Assistant Commissioner Chikka Venkatappa has issued the orders under Section 144 of the CrPC in and around Guru Nanak Public School and Karnataka High School. Orders will be in force between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Monday. — Staff Correspondent

HUBLI: Shankarappa Bijawad and Iranna Malagi have been elected president and vice-president of Agricultural Produce Market Committee of Amargol in Hubli. In the election that was held on Saturday by the Tahsildar S.S. Nagathana as election officer both were declared as elected unopposed. — Staff Correspondent

Women drown in canal

HASSAN: Two women were drowned in Sri Ramadevarakatte canal in Holenarsipur taluk on Sunday. The Holenarsipur Town Police, who registered a case in this regard gave the names of deceased as Tejaswini More (22) and Jyothi (25) from Aralepet in Hassan town. Police said four people including the deceased went on a picnic to Sri Ramadevarakatte. Tejaswini drowned in

the river while washing her hands. Jyothi drowned while trying to save her friend. The police have recovered the body of Tejaswini they are yet to trace the body of Jyothi.
