Does YSR merit the ranking?

Does YSR merit the ranking?

Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy seems jubilant over a magazine survey calling him the third best Chief Minister in the country. However, it is a bit confusing as the State Government, under YSR's rule, has faced flak for alleged corruption in various projects, increased faction feudsin Rayalaseema area, bringing out overnight GOs and cancelling them the next day.

Most MLAs are undisciplined and interfere in administrative affairs, influencing the decisions of officials. Police personnel, including IPS Officers, are toeing the line of politicians at the cost their self-respect. Every official decision has to be routed through a local MLA. Because of this, the police personnel are unable to control law and order and criminal activity in society. How long will this show of politicians go on? Is there no solution? People have to wait for more than two years to teach a lesson to politicians.

Superfast!!!

Every week I travel by Simhapuri Express from Nellore to Secunderabad and back - since it was introduced in three-tier AC compartment. The train runs late almost every day.

It takes more than 12 hours to reach its destination while buses take seven hours to travel the distance. Why does a superfast train take 12 hours? Normally, the train leaves Nellore at the scheduled time but arrives late by one to two hours at Secunderabad - instead of the schedule arrival time of 8.20 a.m.

As a result, almost half a day is lost. Similarly, the train departs Secunderabad at 9.30 p.m. and reaches Gudur at 9 or 10 a.m. Besides, the timings are inconvenient both at Gudur and Secunderabad. The train should reach Secunderabad at least by 7.30 a.m instead of 8.20 a.m. - similarly at Gudur too. I request the railway authorities to change the timings and run the train punctually.

Tributes to a legend

The demise of Ustad Bismillah Khan is a great loss to the music world. His ideals are all great qualities to emulate. In every aspect, he deserved the Bharat Ratna. Doordarshan presented a 1½ hour documentary by Goutam Ghosh, which was a real tribute to Khan Sab!

Gandhian studies

This is in reference to the SVU's move to withdraw the course in Gandhian Studies ( The Hindu , dated August 8, 2006). It is not surprising that Gandhian philosophy does not seem to be relevant to the present generation. In this context, my mind goes back to the first sentence in Aldous Huxley's novel "Ape and Essence" - which begins with the sentence. "That was the day of Gandhiji's assassination", indicating that all good in the world has been wiped out and evil has taken over.
