MANGALORE: The Department of Horticulture will focus on promoting cultivation of pineapple in Dakshina Kannada, said G. K. Vasanth Kumar, director, State Department of Horticulture, here on Sunday. In an informal chat with The Hindu, he said the department had given importance to promote cultivation of cashew, cocoa and jasmine in Mangalore region. Considering the potential for the cultivation of pineapple and demand for this fruit the department had decided to promote its cultivation. Stating that cashew production in the State was not on a par with the demand, he said that the department was providing cashew saplings on demand in this region. It was the largest cashew growing area in the State. The department was ready to supply cashew saplings if there was more demand. Mr. Kumar said Mangalore airport was growing fast. When cargo handling would commence at the airport there was scope for the setting up of cold storage then handling of horticulture and floriculture produce would become easy, he said.
