WARM WELCOME: Tourists disembarking from Pacific Princess being welcomed traditionally at the New Mangalore Port dock here on Sunday.
MANGALORE: The cruise liner Pacific Princess called on New Mangalore Port during her second voyage here on Sunday with 623 passengers and 384 crew on board. A press release from S. Gopalakrishna, traffic manager, New Mangalore Port Trust said 206 passengers went on a tour and visited places such as 1,000 pillar Basadi at Moodbidri, statue of Bahubali at Karkala, Soans Farm, cashew processing units near the Port, St. Aloysius chapel, Gokarnanatha Temple and returned to the ship. Pacific Princess, which sailed out 1 p.m., proceeded to Phuket, Thailand. The port had done well in handling cargo during the first five months of the current financial year.
Traffic trend
The trend in traffic since April this year showed high growth rate in handling of containers (83 per cent), fertilizers (58 per cent) and coal (40 per cent). With creation of additional infrastructure facilities such as the multi-purpose deep draught general cargo berth, there was significant growth in handling of manually handled cargo such as iron ore fines, coal and fertilizers, Mr. Gopalakrishna said. The Port is handling more cargo from the hinterland by utilising the newly commissioned Mangalore-Hassan Railway line, said Mr. Gopalakrishna.
