CHENNAI: Students of MOP Vaishnav College for Women can now watch college events and listen to guest speakers in their classrooms, thanks to their new campus television station. Channel M.O.P., which will be managed by the Media Department of the college, involves networking of the digital studio and 60 classrooms of the college equipped with television and audio video equipment that enable about 3,500 students to view live programmes simultaneously.
"Reach to grassroots"
Launching the station and digital resource centre on Sunday, Minister for Higher Education K. Ponmudi said the success of development communication depended on its reach at the grassroots level. He suggested that students must also involve themselves in producing programmes in Tamil.
"Need-based and innovative"
Appreciating the project of the college as need-based and innovative, Mr. Ponmudi said such ventures were needed to develop the potential of students to compete in national and international fields. Youth must use their knowledge for social development apart from utilising it for progress in tehri careers, Mr. Ponmudi added. He lauded the college for providing socially relevant and job-oriented courses.
1-crore project
Giving a detailed account of Channel M.O.P., college principal K. Nirmala Prasad said the project worth Rs.1 crore would help students conduct interviews and interactive sessions. It would also provide them insight into concepts of television programming and camera movements. The creative content of the programmes would be provided by students of all departments. The project will be extended to other educational institutions for knowledge sharing.
Project upgradation
There are also plans to upgrade the project by uplinking to EDUSAT, the satellite developed for the education sector, and give vocational training for students.
Community television
The facility would also be converted to a community television station and cover areas like sanitation and health for the benefit of public, the Principal said. College secretary P. Haridas also participated.
