CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Government notified on Friday an amendment to the Tamil Nadu Panchayats Act, 1994, to continue the reservation for Scheduled Castes in four panchayats. The offices of the presidents of Pappapatti, Keeripatti and Nattarmangalam panchayats in Madurai district and Kottakatchiyendal panchayat will continue to be reserved.

The Government has also notified an amendment to the Tamil Nadu Town Panchayats, Third Grade Municipalities, Municipalities and Corporations Rules, 1996, and the Tamil Nadu Panchayats Rules, 1995, to continue the reservation of seats reserved for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (SCs/STs) in the wards or divisions of the State's panchayats, municipalities and corporations, subject to any change in the number of reserved seats due to population changes.

In another notification, the third State Finance Commission's tenure to study the financial position of local bodies has been extended from August 31, 2006 to September 30, 2006.
