Power shutdown

CHENNAI: Power supply will be suspended in Esplanade, Egmore, Sowcarpet West, Porur, Toll Gate, Seven Wells, Vepery, Periamet, Tondiarpet, Korukkupet, Thirumullaivoyal, Anna Nagar North, Thousand Lights, Nungambakkam and Kilpauk on September 5 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. for maintenance work. Supply will be resumed before 5 p.m. if the work is completed.

Last date for water tax payment

The Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board has announced in a circular that the last date for payment of Water and Sewerage Tax/Charges for the first half year of 2006-07 has been extended without surcharge to September 30. The collection centres of the Metro Water Board will function on all days, so consumers are requested to avail this facility of paying taxes/charges even on holidays.

Selection tests for Astronomy Olympiad

The selection tests for the International Astronomy Olympiad will be conducted at the B.M. Birla Planetarium, Periyar Science and Technology Centre. The first round of National Standard Examination in Astronomy (NSEA) will be conducted on November 26 (3 p.m - 4.30 p.m).

It will be at two levels - for the junior group, students born between January 1, 1992 and December 31, 1993 and for seniors those born between January 1, 1990 and December 31, 1991.

Students appearing for Standard X and XII examination this academic year are not eligible. The question paper will contain multiple choice questions. A good understanding in physics, mathematics along with basic knowledge in astronomy is needed. In the preliminary round, 300 students will be selected. Interested students can register by giving name and age proof, before September 15. Details: 2441 0025/24416751.

Road safety awareness

A road safety awareness programme was organised at PS Higher Secondary School, Mylapore on September 2. About 100 cadets from twelve schools participated in the programme that was organised by Adyar Range, Tamil Nadu Police Traffic Warden Organisation.

Varsity spot interviews

Representatives of Oklahoma City University will be conducting spot interviews on September 9 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. to p.m. at Visu International Ltd, 138, NVR Building, Nelson Manickam Rd, Mehta Nagar, Nungambakkam. Call 23741418 for details.

Mathematics festival

The Department of Mathematics of GSS Jain College for Women recently organised `Damors 2006', an inter-collegiate Mathematics festival for city colleges.

Inaugurating the event, Kalpakam, a professor at the Department of Mathematics, IIT Madras, defined the subject as the creation of the mind. M. K. Malathi, college principal and Gautam Vaid, honorary secretary, also participated.

Bharathi Women's College won the rolling shield bagging the maximum prizes.
