Padma Santhanam dead

CHENNAI: Padma Santhanam, wife of T.S. Santhanam, founder-chairman of Sundaram Finance Limited, passed away in the early hours of Sunday. She was 85.

Born in March 1921, Ms. Padma Santhanam, who had education in Madurai, was deeply involved in social welfare activities, particularly those related to children's welfare and education. She was closely associated with The School-KFI right from its inception.

She took a keen interest in nurturing Avvai Home, which is devoted to children's welfare, Srinivasa Gandhi Nilayam that works for destitute women, and All India Women's Association.

The news of her demise was received with shock by her relatives, friends and associates. She was active till the end. There was a steady stream of people from various walks of life at her residence on D'Silva Road in Mylapore.

Among those who paid their respects included Ashok Leyland Managing Director R. Seshasayee, Chairman and Managing Director of Sundram Fasteners Limited Suresh Krishna and chairperson of Adyar Cancer Institute V. Shantha.

Ms. Santhanam is survived by daughter Prema Ramanujam and sons S. Ram, Chairman and Managing director of Wheels India Limited and S. Viji, Chairman of Sundaram Finance Limited, besides grand children and great grand children. The cremation was held at the Mylapore crematorium.

Her husband Mr. Santhanam was the fourth son of late T.V. Sundaram Iyengar, founder of the TVS Group of Companies. He died in April last year.
