President Kalam in Chennai

He will take part in a host of events in the city

CHENNAI: President A.P.J Abdul Kalam arrived here on Sunday evening to inaugurate the University of Madras's 150th foundation day celebrations on September 4.

He was received by Governor Surjit Singh Barnala, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, his cabinet colleagues and senior officials.

He will participate in a host of events. The Chennai city police are providing five-tier security.

Before the inaugural function at 9 a.m., the President will go around the recently renovated Senate Hall of the university at around 8.45 a.m.

Later, at the University Centenary Auditorium he will declare open a national seminar on `Talents, Technology & Knowledge-Power for India' and release a commemorative stamp on `University of Madras,' in the denomination of Rs. 5.

Mr. Barnala and Mr. Karunanidhi will participate in the event.

Travel to Ambur

In the afternoon, the President will travel to Ambur to inaugurate the Ambur Muslim Educational Society's centenary celebrations. He will also inaugurate Indian Bank's centenary celebrations. The Governor and Union Finance minister P. Chidambaram will participate in the event to be held at the Chennai Trade Centre at Nandambakkam at 3.45 p.m.

In the evening, Mr. Kalam will present the `Tholkappiyar' award to Mr. Karunanidhi at Kalaivanar Arangam on Wallajah Road. Around 7.35 p.m., he will interact with 20 farmers of Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur on the Taramani campus of Anna University.

Before leaving for New Delhi on Monday night, Mr. Kalam will meet his friends and relatives at the Chennai airport lounge.
