CHENNAI: President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam will interact with a group of farmers from different villages across Kancheepuram and Thiruvallur districts during his visit to Chennai. The President's meeting with 20 farmers is being organised by the National Agro Foundation (NAF) on Monday. The foundation, an initiative of the late C. Subramaniam, was started with the aim of improving the quality of life of farmers through agriculture, cattle and social development. Farmers in 47 villages in Tamil Nadu have been benefiting from NAF projects. President Kalam succeeded Subramaniam as the chairman of the governing council of the foundation. Members of the foundation said the President insisted on meeting farmers when the visit to the centre was proposed. As part of the implementation of various projects, the NAF will set up a `farm school' in Chunampet village in Kancheepuram district. Children from urban schools will be taken to this centre so that they can understand the processes involved in farming. The activities of the foundation include enabling farmers to use scientific farming techniques such as soil testing and crop rotation. The NAF also provides farmers with the knowledge of pesticides, drip irrigation, crop diseases, productivity, costs and returns.
