Thiruvananthapuram : The City Corporation has launched a programme to identify sports talents among schoolchildren and provide training facilities to hone their skills. The first batch of 280 students from city schools was identified after a three-day selection trial camp held in July. The initial selection list includes 82 girls. The Corporation would organise a physical training camp here from September 8 to 17 for the selected students. Various committees were set up for the programme. The committees would utilise the services of sports officials and coaches in various disciplines. Mayor C. Jayan Babu said the project was designed to spot and nurture talent in schoolchildren and create sportspersons of excellence. Sports Minister M. Vijayakumar will inaugurate the 10-day training camp here on September 8. Pannian Ravindran MP will deliver the keynote address. In a pressnote chairman of the Corporation's standing committee on Health and Education G.R. Anil on Sunday directed the selected students to report for the camp at the Central Stadium at 7.30 a.m. on September 8.
