Farm workers want job scheme expedited

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Agricultural Workers' Association has sought speeding up of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme works even while checking `corruption' in its implementation.

In a statement issued here on Sunday, B. Venkat, general secretary, charged that postmasters, contractors and politicians were `colluding' to resort to corrupt practices. Payments running into crores were being drawn in the name of the poor.

While action was being taken against field assistants, Government employees were allowed to go scot-free. He wanted the Government to hold an all-party meeting on the scheme and to take steps for ensuring that all persons who sought work under the scheme were accommodated. If this was not done, Mr. Venkat feared migration of farm labour and hunger deaths.
