SETWIN buses back on roads

YSR flags off first batch; 60 buses to be introduced in two months

HYDERABAD: Weather beaten and under fire for their high pollution and accident rate, SETWIN bus services which were phased out of the city roads two-and-a-half years are back again in a new gleaming avatar much to the chagrin of the RTC authorities.

Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy flagged off the first batch of SETWIN city services here on Sunday from his camp office.

Revenue Minister Dharmana Prasada Rao along with his ministerial colleague Sabitha Indra Reddy purchased the first tickets and went on a short drive.

Plans

"We plan to press into service 60 more buses in two months," SETWIN chairman M.A. Khan told presspersons.

The first batch comprising 16 minibuses with 22-seater capacity and Euro III standards will be operated on the old routes of SETWIN in the twin cities and Ranga Reddy district.

"Around 400 families were totally dependent on the bus services and we thank the Chief Minister for saving their livelihood," he said.

The SETWIN services had begun operations way back in 1978 under the self-employment scheme.
