This Day That Age
British and French Generals in charge of military preparations in the Eastern Mediterranean held secret talks at a military airfield in Algiers on September 2, according to reports. A strict security blackout was clamped down and access to the Maison Blanche airfield was barred to all journalists. French General Andre Beauffre drove to the airfield to meet Lt. Gen. Hugh Stockwell, widely reported to be in charge of Britain's military preparations in connection with the Suez dispute. The cruiser, de Grasse, France's most modern warship, arrived in Toulon on September 3 from Brest to join the Mediterranean squadron standing by at Toulon. The de Grasse, an anti-aircraft vessel, has a cruising speed of 33 knots. Fitted with 36 anti-aircraft guns of various calibre, it can be used as a fast troop carrier.
