ANU to celebrate Foundation Day in a different manner

GUNTUR: Acharya Nagarjuna University will organise a rural sports meet on its campus for people of eight surrounding villages in Guntur district on the occasion of its Foundation Day.

Formally declared operational on September 11, 1976, ANU for the first time celebrated Foundation Day in 2005 by honouring all past vice-chancellors, but this time it was decided to have a milieu of university-industry-society, ANU Vice-Chancellor V. Balamohandas told reporters on Tuesday.

Traditional games

Competitions in traditional rural games would be organised in karra-billa, chedugudu, puli-meka, karrasamu, dappulapoti, and kolatam for men; while women would compete in chendu banti, accham gillalu, ashta-chamma, thokkudu billa, and rangoli. One team per village had been invited in each game and there would be two prizes in each event, he announced.

An expert in study of traditional games hailing from Tirupati, S.V. Rama Rao, who even authored a book on rules of these games, would supervise the competitions, said coordinator of the event M. Durga Prasad. University Director of Physical Education Y. Kishore would make arrangements for conduct of the events on September 8 and 9 on the campus. No cash prize would be given, he added.

Many villagers had been invited to showcase their skills in some traditional arts like traditional rural style of dressing, displaying bullocks and country hen/cock or different varieties, on September 11.

Interaction with industry

A seminar on how the university could interact with industry and improve placement of its students, designing its cooperation through several MoU already entered into. ANU had MoUs with 150 industrial units or organisations, but only a handful were effective or in effect now.
