News Analysis
Malik Siraj Akbar of Quetta, Pakistan, in an email, says, "I write with reference to the news story of Nirupama Subramanian, `Baloch Alliance quits seats' (September 4, 2006). I wish to make some corrections. It was not the Four Party Baloch Alliance that decided to quit but the Balochistan National Party (BNP), a component of the Four Party Baloch Alliance. The other parties in the alliance, including the National Party and the Jamori Watan Party (JWP) of late Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti, the tribal chief, whose killing on August 26 triggered the latest wave of violence in Balochistan, also have a presence in the national and provincial assembly. But they have still not decided to quit. It was a party decision; not that of the Alliance." Nirupama Subramanian clarifies that the reader is right. The heading "Barnala donates eyes" (Tamil Nadu, September 4, 2006) is misleading, says a reader, as the Governor of Tamil Nadu had only signed a card pledging his eyes. In "Centre must change tax structure: Karat" (Internet edition, September 4, 2006) the accompanying picture, that should have been of CPI (M) General Secretary Prakash Karat, was erroneously that of former External Affairs Minister Mr. Natwar Singh. With reference to the report "Centre's counsel for status quo on border dispute hailed" (Karnataka, August 29, 2006, page 4), a reader says the reference to Bellary being given from Andhra to Karnataka by following the language formula is wrong, as before the States reorganisation, Bellary district was in the Madras Presidency, just like the other Andhra districts of Cuddapah, Anantapur and Kurnool. When Andhra State was carved out in 1953, Bellary was merged with the Kannada State of Mysore. A reader points out that in The Hindu Crossword 8696 (Variety" page, September 1, 2006), the solution to Clue 22 Down ("Bacteria that causes disease (7)") should have been "Bacilli", and not "Baccili" (The Hindu Crossword 8697, September 2, 2006). It is only then that the answer to Clue 28 Across ("Member of the Oxford University (7)"), "Oxonian", would fit in, adds the reader. The New York Times clarifies: "An August 23 story by the Associated Press about a biotech company finding a new way of making stem cells carried an ambiguous headline that said: `Biotech firm creates stem cells without destroying human embryos, but doesn't end debate.' The story accurately reported that the researchers used a new technique that involves using an embryo at a very early stage of development and removing a single cell, which can be coaxed into spawning an embryonic stem cell line. With only one cell removed, the rest of the embryo retains its potential for development, so the new approach makes it possible to create stem cells without destroying embryos. In doing their research, however, the scientists chose to remove many cells, and thus did end up destroying the embryos." (The story appeared in The Hindu, "Newscape" page, August 24, 2006 as "Stem cells, now without harming embryos"). It is the policy of The Hindu to correct significant errors as soon as possible.
