Manavjit wins gold, India reigns

NEW DELHI: World champion Manavjit Singh Sandhu asserted his class yet again as he clinched the gold in the Asian clay shooting championship with a 141 out of 150 at the National shooting centre here on Monday.

The 29-year-old Manavjit went into the trap final with a 120 out of 125 along with compatriot Mansher Singh, but shot better, a 21 out of 25, to grab the gold in a strong field of 50 shooters.

It was a phenomenal 1-2-3 for India, as Mansher and overnight leader Anwer Sultan followed Manavjit to take the silver and bronze with scores of 140 and 138 respectively.

The Indian team overwhelmed China by 15 points for the gold with a 359 out of 375.

Manavjit had rounds of 23, 24, 25, 23 and 25 in the preliminary phase. Mansher had the best performance on the second day of the trap competition as he pulled up strongly after shooting two rounds of 23 overnight. He had rounds of 25, 25 and 24 but undid the remarkable flow with a 20 in the final.

Anwer, the sole leader overnight with a 49 out of 50, came up with rounds of 24, 23 and 23 in the preliminary phase and wound up with a 19 in the final.
