Pawar's daughter to file papers

Special Correspondent

Supriya Sule

MUMBAI: The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) on Monday decided to field Supriya Sule, daughter of the party chief and Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar, for the Rajya Sabha seat of Maharashtra that fell vacant due to the death of party stalwart Vasant Chavan.

Ms. Sule is expected to file her nomination papers on Tuesday afternoon at the State legislature here.

The NCP's Maharashtra Parliamentary Board, that met here on Monday, unanimously decided to nominate Ms. Sule, said Union Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel, who attended the meeting as a Central observer.

Later, briefing reporters, Mr. Patel said he conveyed the decision to the party's Central Parliamentary Board, which approved it.

The party ally, the Congress, had also extended its support to Ms. Sule.

"We believe that the party would benefit by her work in the Rajya Sabha and have therefore decided to send her to the Rajya Sabha despite Mr. Pawar's view that she should work first in the party for few years," he said.
