Rajesh Kannan in tremendous form

Madurai: Centre-forward Rajesh Kannan was in tremendous form as he scored four goals each in two matches and helped Sourashtra College register 8-1 and 10-1 wins over Raju's College, Rajapalayam, and Arulanandar College respectively in the four-team league of the Madurai Kamaraj University Champion Trophy hockey tournament at the university ground here on Monday.

MSS Wakfboard College also recorded two wins — against Arulanandar College (3-2) and Raju's College (1-0) — to set up a title clash with Sourashtra College.

The results: Sourashtra College 8 (Rajesh Kannan 4, Sathayaseelan 3 [hat-trick], Solai Arasu) bt Raju's College, Rajapalayam 1 (Palsamy); MSSWB College 3 (Karthik, Mohamed Umar, Ramakrishnan) bt Arulanandar College 2 (Arun, Ashok Kumar); Sourashtra College 10 (Rajesh Kannan 4, Ponraj 3, Manikandan, Sathyaseelan, Solai Arasu) bt Arulanandar College 1 (Ashok Kumar); MSSWB College 1 (Sivanathan) bt Raju's College 0.

Balamurugan in final

N. Balamurugan of MSP Club and P. Ravichandran of Divya Club entered the men's singles final of the LIC district-level carrom tournament organised by LIC Recreation Club here on Monday.

The results: Men: Singles: Semifinals: N. Balamurugan (MSP Club) bt S. Raja (Divya Club) 25-24, 25-19; P. Ravichandran (Divya) bt R. Thirukkumaran (MSP) 25-0, 25-22.

Quarterfinals: N. Balamurugan bt P.D. Mothilal (GYM) 25-4, 25-2; S. Raja bt M. Arumugam (ACC) 25-14, 25-23; T. Thirukkumaran bt S. Ananthanarayanan (HCC) 25-7, 25-9; P. Ravichandran bt R. Babu (KCC) 25-12, 23-25, 25-20.

Meenakshi College wins

Sri Meenakshi Government College for Women, with an all-win record in the four-team league, lifted the Agri Cup in the Madurai district inter-collegiate women's volleyball tournament organised by Madurai District Volleyball Association at Madura College ground here on Sunday.

Lady Doak College finished runner-up with two wins and Fatima College finished third with a solitary win over Chermathai Vasan Women's College.

The results: Sri Meenakshi Govt. College for Women bt Lady Doak College 25-22, 26-24; bt Fatima College 25-19, 17-25, 25-13; bt Chermathai Vasan Women's College 25-12, 25-16.

Lady Doak College bt Chermathai Vasan Women's College 25-15, 25-17; bt Fatima College 25-21, 25-19; Fatima College bt Chermathai Vasan Women's College 25-16, 25-17.

Title for VOC College

At Sattur, VOC College (Tuticorin) won the MUTA football tournament for colleges affiliated to Madurai Kamaraj and Manonmaniam Sundaranar Universities with a resounding 6-1 victory over Adithanar College (Tiruchendur) in the final at S.R. Naidu College ground on Sunday.

Agninath and Dinesh scored a brace each while Muppidari and Lawrence scored one goal each for VOC College. Sheik Mohamed scored the lone goal for Adithanar College.

Earlier in the semifinals, Adithanar College beat GVN College, Kovilpatti, 4-0 and VOC College prevailed over MSS Wakfboard College, Madurai, 6-4 via tie-breaker, after the teams shared four goals in regulation time.
