NCC cadets embark on ocean expedition

Aim is to impart practical training in navigation

PONDICHERRY: Forty cadets of NCC's Naval wing have embarked on an ocean expedition from Pondicherry to Thopputhurai for 12 days, starting from Monday.

20 cadets from I Pondicherry Naval unit and an equal number of cadets from V Tamil Nadu unit are participating in the expedition, held as part of the Republic Day.

Commander P.K Sudhakaran, Commanding Officer of Pondicherry Naval unit, flagged off the expedition from the New Port Jetty.

The expedition was held with an aim to develop the spirit of adventure, to impart practical training in navigation, boat handling and sailing on whaler boats for the cadets.

The aim was also to inculcate team spirit and build capacity to live in cramped condition in a boat at sea for prolonged period of time, said the commander.

The theme of this year's expedition is "Unity and Discipline", which is the motto of the NCC.

The cadets in two 27 feet whaler boats would cover 436 km. During their voyage, they would make halts at Cuddalore, Parangipettai, Pazhayar, Poompuhar, Nagapattinam and reach Thopputhurai on September 9

The cadets were given extensive training in the handling of whaler boats, rigging of sails, boat pulling, life-saving drills and communication skills at a 12-day camp in Chunnambar, near here, two weeks ago.
