Praveen lights up final day's play

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Praveen Achuthan's unbeaten knock of 112 lit up the final day's play even as the three-day inter-zone under-19 cricket match between South and Central ended in a draw here on Monday.

Central, which conceded the lead, refused to take any chances, preferring to bat on till the final session. Jipson Thomachan and Ajay Jayakumar too fared creditably with the willow for Central.

Resuming at 131 for two, Central declared its second innings at 369 for six in 110 overs, leaving South an impossible target of 332 off 28 overs.

South scored 107 for three in 27 overs when the match was called off. However, South earned two points for taking the lead.

The scores:

Central 205 and 369 for six in 110 overs (Praveen Achuthan 112 n.o., Jipson Thomachan 31, Ajay Jayakumar 31 n.o.) drew with South 243 and 107 for three in 27 overs (Sachin Mohan 45).

Ryan belts double century

All-rounder Ryan Ninan belted a fine double century (212) as Idukki gained the first innings lead over Thrissur in the Central Zone under-22 inter-district cricket championship at the St. Paul's College Ground, Kalamassery, on Monday. Ryan also finished with seven wickets from the two-dayer and helped his team take two points.

At the Ambalamugal Kochi Refinery Oval, host Ernakulam defeated Palakkad by seven wickets and picked four points. The scores: Thrissur 276 & 108 for six in 25 overs (Arun Alex 36) vs Idukki 387 in 87.1 overs (Ryan Ninan 212, V.S. Shiju 65, Afsar three for 72, Nithin three for 61) Idukki 2 pts, Thrissur 0.

Palakkad 162 & 114 in 39 overs (Sreedharan 40, V.S. Sunil four for 31, K.L. Midhun three for 42) lost to Ernakulam 133 & 145 for three in 26.2 overs (Abhishek Hegde 52, Robert Fernandes 44 n.o.). Ernakulam 4 pts, Palakkad 0.

Big win for Thiruvananthapuram

Thiruvananthapuram crushed Kollam by an innings and 11 runs in the South Zone inter-district U-22 cricket tournament at the Medical College ground, Kottayam, on Monday.

Sambasiva Sharma scored an unbeaten century (154) as Thiruvananthapuram took a handy 154-run first innings lead. Kollam didn't fare much better in its second essay as P. Prasanth (five for 28) and S. Sivasundar (four for 46) ripped the batting apart.

Kollam folded up for 143 runs with only Abdul Samad (29 not out) offering some resistance. Thiruvananthapuram took four points for the win.

At the Nehru Stadium, the Pathanamthitta-Alappuzha encounter ended in a draw with the former gaining two points for taking the first innings lead.

Needing 366 runs to overhaul Pathanamthitta's first innings score of 395, Alappuzha was forced to follow on after it was dismissed for 228 in 73 overs on the second day. Pathanamthitta did not have enough overs to force an outright win but managed to reduce Alappuzha to 99 for six in its second innings.

Kollam 167 & 143 in 48 overs (Abdul Samad 29 not out, P. Prasanth five for 28, S. Sivasundar four for 46) lost to Thiruvananthapuram 321 in 67.4 overs (Sambasiva Sharma 154 not out, S.R. Aneez 37, P. Prasanth 35); Pathanamthitta 395 in 77.2 overs drew with Alappuzha 228 in 73 overs (Bipin K. Oommen 59, Sathil 53, Biji 37, S. Anish three for 39, Jibu Jacob three for 43) & 99 for six in 27 overs (Vijesh 40, S. Anish three for 49).
