STATUE STAYS: The Sivaji statue at the Kamarajar Salai - Radhakrishnan Salai junction in Chennai. File photo: S. R. Raghunathan
New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday said no clarification was required on the issue of installation of the Sivaji Ganesan statue at the Kamarajar Salai-Radhakrishnan Salai junction in Chennai. The Madras High Court had asked the State to approach the apex court for clarification. The Tamil Nadu government in its application said that the then AIADMK government in April 10, 2003 had given an undertaking that no temporary or permanent structure would ever be allowed on the main road which would affect free flow of traffic. Referring to this undertaking, the present Government said the Sivaji statue was not installed in the middle of the road. The Government said that the apex court judgment was not applicable to the facts of the present case.
Installation
The Bench told the counsel, "How can we say something which is based on facts? The statue has been installed in a traffic island. If you think that the installation of the statue violated our order, don't do it. If not, don't bother about it."
